Hanging Rock or asknown as Batu Gantung is a natural form of stone sculpture located in Parapat, North Sumatra. If you ever travel to Lake Toba, sure you do not miss this attraction. Almost all domestic and mancanegara who go to Lake Toba and Samosir Island, stop by to see this Hanging Rock. Why is the name of Hanging Rock? It is because the position of the rock was hanging down.
These stones look like a human body posture with a straight line down to the inverted state. There are so many legends that developed in the community for generations about the origin of the formation of these natural phenomena.
Hanging sculpture natural stone has its own story that developed in the local community. A legend about a beautiful girl named Seruni and her beloved dog, who was sitting on the edge of the cliff. The girl was sad because her parents will be married her with a man she doesn't love.
Seruni couldn't calm herself down and with a chaotic mind, Seruni fell while standing on the edge of the cliff. her dog was running into the house to tell the situation to Seruni's parents so they can help her immediately. when the dog and Seruni's parents returned to the place where Seruni was fell, Seruni whose heart is still miserable by sadness she says "marapat, marapat, marapat" ("move closer, move closer, move closer") to the rock that is near to her. Her dog was trying to help Seruni also fell. The stone continues to move closer to choke the dog's body and Seruni.
Therefore, there are not only the human body like a hanging stone, but also a dog like a hanging stone beside him. thats the reason why the local people called it a Parapat (move closer). This legend is affecting every tourist to be curious about the truth of the legend or the natural processes that are shaping the stone to be very different from other stones.
That's how the myth of the Hanging Rock attractions located in Lake Toba is now a story that is passed down from generation to generation by previous generations. Eventhough only a legend, but the story is very interesting to observe. However, if you want to see the Hanging Stone attraction, you can only see it from a distance just cause to go to the location of the Hanging Rock is very difficult, especially the fairly steep cliff.
